For any backpacker weight is always something to think about and one place to save weight is your choice of sleeping bag. But when it comes to sleeping bags there can also be a trade off between weight, and warmth and comfort. And nobody likes to spend cold nights in the wilderness shivering, waiting for the sun to come up.

Down filled sleeping bags have several major advantages over their synthetic counterparts which make their use for backpacking a must.

1. Weight – When it comes to warmth to weight ratio it’s virtually impossible to beat a down filled bag. You simply get better insulating value out of down fill then you can get from man made synthetic insulation which leads to significant weight savings.

2. Warmth – Because of its high warmth to weight ratio a down bag will keep you warm and cozy on even the coldest of backpacking treks. If you are tired of being cold in the wilderness then a down bag with the proper temperature rating is what you need.

3. Compact Ability – For all its insulating ability a down bag can be compacted down to the size of a toaster, particularly if you use a compacting stuff sack. It will not only save weight but it will give you more space in your Backpack for other essentials.

There is one major disadvantage to using a down sleeping bag and that is excessive moisture. If it gets wet down loses it lofting ability which in turn seriously reduces its insulating value. Most modern down bags use water resistant/proof outer coverings that prevent this problem in all but the wettest of conditions.

You will also pay more for a down bag but when it comes to sleeping bags the old adage is true; you get what you pay for.
